Adolescent Groups
I believe that you should celebrate who you are, what makes you unique and why you matter. For members of our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth community, I provide safe, inclusive and affirming groups to foster relationships, and interpersonal skills, and the evolution of identity.
Open to young people between the ages of 14-16 and 17-21, my program will build self-esteem and help ready you for various life stages. I also offer support to help LGBTQ young people, ages 13 and older, make healthy decisions about drugs and alcohol and protection from sexually transmitted disease.
I understand that, as a young member of the LGBTQ community, you may need support when facing a wide range of potentially overwhelming circumstances and emotions. From issues surrounding coming out and discrimination, to bullying, violence, anxiety, depression, HIV or other health concerns, abuse and other crises, our group can provide the support you need.
Here you can meet with a counselor who understands what you are experiencing, and connect with other LGBTQ young people to build a support network for sharing experiences.
Please contact Carolyn Tucker LPC at 770-789-0847 for information on time and location and to go through the screening process to assess whether the group would be a good fit.
Groups held weekly. Fee 35.00.
Adult Support
Even if you are not going to therapy to deal with your sexual orientation, you want a therapist who is gay and lesbian friendly. You want to be sure that your chosen therapist is well-versed on issues confronting the gay community and isn’t afraid to talk about sexual issues.
Most gay and lesbian therapy centers on the widely-accepted six stages of homosexuality: 1) identity awareness – feelings that you are different from others or from what you’ve been taught; 2) identity comparison – not understanding why your feelings are different from those of your parents, friends, siblings, etc; 3) identity tolerance – rebelling against homosexual feelings; 4) identity acceptance – embracing your sexuality and what goes with it; 5) identity pride – anger toward parents, society, religion or others who refuse to accept your homosexuality; and 6) identity synthesis – when homosexuality becomes a part of who you are, not the defining factor for your life.
It is my goal to assist you in every phase of the process, and to facilitate self awareness along the way. Whether we are addressing relational conflict or one of the stages of homosexuality, I am willing to ask the hard questions, and to have the difficult conversations that will help you process barriers to self actualization and allow you to access your inner wisdom and intuition about who you are and what your goals are in life.
It is my honor to support you in your journey of self discovery, and to help you plug in to a supportive community to help facilitate a quality of life that allows you to thrive!
